  • Saint Gemma Galgani, known as the “Flower of Lucca,” was a mystic who lived her short life in deep devotion to Christ’s Passion. Born in 1878 near Lucca, Italy, into a faithful Catholic family, she faced immense trials early on—losing her mother at eight, several siblings, and her father by 19. Despite these sorrows, her spirit shone brightly at a Catholic school, though chronic illness cut her studies short. At 16, a near-fatal bout with spinal meningitis was healed through the intercession of saints, sparking her mystical journey. In 1899, she received the stigmata, enduring Christ’s wounds weekly alongside visions of Jesus, Mary, and her guardian angel. Though she yearned to join the Passionist nuns, poor health kept her a layperson, yet she offered every suffering for souls until her death from tuberculosis on Holy Saturday, an earlier time, at age 25.

Canonized in 1940, Saint Gemma’s relics rest in Lucca, her heart in Madrid, and her legacy endures as patron of students, pharmacists, and those with back pain, migraines, or parental loss. Her feast day, April 11 (or May 16 for Passionists), celebrates her humility and sacrifice. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, a fellow stigmatic, urged his followers to seek her guidance, recognizing her as a beacon of holiness amid adversity. Light this candle to honor her witness and draw near to Christ’s redeeming grace!
